SOLANA CUP

The 2017 event begins on March 3 with a Selection Friday Kickoff Social that is open to all LSFCC Members.   TaylorMade will again sponsor the Solana Cup. They are providing complete uniforms for both teams. They will also contribute to a few new twists we are planning for the event.

This year, for the first time, we will have Solana Cup Pasta Night for all LSFCC members. The entire dining room will be open so it will be easier for everyone who’s interested to watch and participate in the pairings party.

On Saturday, prior to the opening tee shots, we will have a putting contest open to all members with a lot of prizes for the winners. We are working with TaylorMade on other activities for Saturday morning.

We hope everyone will come to Solana Cup Pasta night on Friday and the festivities prior to the opening tee shots on Saturday.

At the event, captain Tim Dischner and the WGA co-Captains Kathy Brizendine and Connie Chapman will select the Foursome partners and determine the matchups. Tim will start first by naming his #1 pair, and the WGA Captains will then decide who to match against them. The WGA will select their #2 pair and Tim will respond, until all 6 matches are set. And of course the pari-mutuel station will then be open to all.

On the afternoon of March 4 the teams will play their Foursome matches.......that’s alternate shot for you non-Euros.

Afterwards there will be another social event open to all members.  Again Tim and the WGA Captains will go through the process to pick the next day's Fourball and Individual matches. That will be followed by some additional wagering opportunities for all.

The 2017 Solana Cup Challenge will conclude on Sunday and will be followed by an Awards Event and optional dinner.

All LSFCC members are also invited to the Awards event where either the male figurine will remain upon the Solana Cup Trophy for another year, or........we will lower our heads in shame as the WGA Captains ceremoniously replace it with the female figurine.

The Tee times for matches on Saturday will begin at 12:30pm on #10, last foursome will start at about 1:30pm. Tee times for matches on Sunday will begin at 8:30am. from #1.

Be sure to come out, line the fairways, follow and cheer on the teams.

For those who are not history buffs:

In the inaugural 2011 match the WGA was on fire and, when several matches turned suddenly on Day 2, they walked off with a convincing 9 1/2 – 4 1/2 win.

In 2012 Day 2 was looking eerily similar. Captain Brian O’Leary, playing the last match of the day, was looking at a 25 foot “must make” putt on #16 (now #7) in order to save at least a chance to win his match and thus the point the MGA needed to get to 7 1/2 and reclaim the SC trophy. He drained the putt, also won the next two holes and the MGA escaped.

In 2013 Captain Jim Robyn, playing the last match of the day, drained a 40 foot putt on #18 to get a win in his match and salvage a 7 – 7 tie in the team match, thus retaining the SC Trophy for another year.

In 2014 Captain Tim Dudek, playing the last match of the day, sank a 60 foot chip for eagle on #18 to win his match and salvage a 7 - 7 tie in the team match, thus retaining the SC Trophy for yet another year.

In 2015 Captain Brian O’Leary oversaw the first convincing win by the MGA in the 5 years it has been played. The men took a 1 point lead from Day 1 and extended it on Day 2 to get the win at 10 – 4.

In 2016 Captain Eby Dobson managed another outstanding performance by the MGA team, this time prevailing 9 – 5.

So, after 6 years the results stand at:  MGA 3, WGA 1, Ties 2.
